Charles Young, PE

Though Mr. Young studied to be a civil engineer, he has always maintained an active interest in computer programming, data mining and data visualization. Since starting at Intelligent Infrastructure Systems in 2012, Mr. Young has brought his passion and his education to bear, facilitating nearly every Intelligent Infrastructure Systems project through data mining, analysis and visualization as well as automation. Example data mining project tasks include analyzing large bridge population data sets for market research as well as bridge selection to meet project needs. Data visualization projects include mapping real-time sensor output to 3D models for visualization of various structural responses. Mr. Young also has experience in design, installation, and utilization of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) Systems to track bridge performance and development of finite element models of various structural systems for use in refined load ratings and model calibration. From the population level, Mr. Young helped to develop a risk-based prioritization framework for large bridge populations to aid in owner decision-making, research and field testing of novel sensing technologies for potential inclusion in SHM systems. Across all projects, Mr. Young has aided via development of software, automation tools and algorithms to streamline office and project-specific processes.

Prior to joining Intelligent Infrastructure Systems, Mr. Young worked as a restoration engineer and was involved with various survey and materials testing projects of concrete structures, as well as the design of various concrete repairs. Mr. Young also has experience within the fields of structural design, structural steel fabrication and erection, construction management, and materials research and testing.

Mr. Young earned a BS in Civil Engineering from Drexel University and recently received his MS in Structural Engineering where he researched the Integration of Bridge Deck NDE Data with Model Updating and Structural Identification. He is an NBIS Certified Bridge Inspector, and Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania.
