Intelligent Infrastructure has been tasked by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through Pennoni’s Performance Management of Bridges indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract to deploy RABITâ„˘ Bridge Deck Assessment Tool and THMPERâ„˘ (Targeted Hits for Modal Parameter Estimation and Rating) to the Northwest Cluster to evaluate and test 7 bridges that have been visually inspected by other contractors as part of the Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) Program.
RABITâ„˘ is a robotic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) platform designed to enhance the assessment of bridge decks and was developed as part of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) program. RABITâ„˘ includes high resolution cameras and imaging systems, Electrical Resistivity to characterize the corrosive environment of concrete, Impact Echo and Ultrasonic Surface Waves to evaluate concrete delamination and concrete deck strength, Ground Penetrating Radar to map rebar and other metallic objects below the surface, and a Global Positioning System to record and mark location data.
THMPERâ„˘ delivers a large impact to the surface of a bridge and measures the resulting vibrations of the structure to determine its unique global load carrying characteristics. These vibration signatures are then used to calibrate a refined FE model, which is in turn used to produce load ratings per the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
