A survey was conducted by Intelligent Infrastructure Systems for the supporting rods of the atrium staircase of the new LeBow College of Business Building at Drexel University. The supporting rods were instrumented and strain readings taken to assist the design engineer with determining the appropriate force distribution for the completed staircase. The strain readings were divided into two phases. The first phase included attachment and reading of the strain gages before installation of the supporting rods. The second phase focused on reading the gages after the staircase was completed. Using the resultant measurements, the contractor was directed to adjust the tensile force in the rods through the turnbuckle connections. This allowed for safe and accurate force levels to be achieved in the final configuration.
