According to Federal Highway Administration (FWHA), bridge performance is not well understood and still relies heavily on expert opinion or significant assumptions and generalizations for assessment. Starting with the National Bridge Inventory, data on bridges has been collected in consistent, systematic and computerized formats since 1971. These databases have improved significantly over time, but they still are not a complete basis for realistic assessment of bridge performance. Over the last few years, a number of national programs have been initiated (i.e., the FHWA Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) Program) to provide a better understanding of bridge health and performance. However, additional research studies are needed to support the objectives of these national programs. As part of the recently awarded Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) for the Federal Highway Administration’s Performance Management of Bridges Program, the project team will provide Technical Assistance to FHWA in support of the Long-Term Bridge Performance Program and also in support of the development of a Bridge Health and Performance Index.

Technical Assistance to the Long Term Bridge Performance Program
As part of the Technical Assistance project, Intelligent Infrastructure Systems is providing on-site, field, and remote technical assistance in support of the LTBP and specifically covers the validation of field data, development of protocols, development of a quantitative bridge traffic database and an accelerated bridge testing database. In addition, as part of this contract Intelligent Infrastructure Systems is also providing expert assessments at bridge sites, developing content for FHWA newsletters and websites and providing on-site support to manage publications and meetings.
