Nondestructive Testing (NDT)

Nondestructive Testing (NDT)

Proper and periodic maintenance is fundamental to any civil infrastructure so that it can perform safely and efficiently throughout its service life. Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is an essential tool to determine the existing condition of a structure or its individual components without disturbing its structural integrity. Traditional visual inspection is useful for periodically checking the state of infrastructure to ensure its safety and to provide qualitative judgements of its overall condition. However, it does not provide quantitative data and is limited to what is visible on the surface. NDT is objective and provides insight into the condition or performance of structural components that cannot be observed visually. NDE saves time and helps to make better decisions about the structure to develop suitable maintenance and rehabilitation schemes to increase the long-term safety and durability of the structure. Specifically, NDE can be employed for the following purposes:

  • Construction QAQC to check adherence to plans and specifications
  • Quantitative and spatial deterioration data for rehabilitation and repair planning
  • Evaluation of the integrity of critical individual structural components

Intelligent Infrastructure Systems has the capabilities and experience to select the appropriate NDE technology given the demands and constraints of each project. These technologies include the following:

  • Impact Echo (IE)
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
  • Concrete Ultrasonic Surface Waves (USW)
  • Electrical Resistivity (ER)
  • Half Cell Potential (HCP)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
  • Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)

With the growing number of aging bridges in the nation and limited budgets to build new bridges, the importance of proper maintenance and rehabilitation guided by NDT is more important than ever. NDT can also be embedded with a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system and act as a supplement to better understand the performance of the bridge.
